One of our main characters is a member of the Zouaves of Death, so it’s worth taking a closer look at who these elite soldiers truly were.
The Zouaves of Death were a legendary insurgent unit from the 1863 January Uprising — an elite force among volunteers, a symbol of courage and uncompromising resolve. Formed by French officer François de Rochebrune, the unit was composed of fighters who took a solemn oath: to fight to the very end — no retreat, no surrender, victory or death.
They stood out with their striking appearance: black uniforms with a white Maltese cross on the chest, red fezzes, and tall boots. On the battlefield, they looked like specters — inspiring awe and fear. Armed with revolvers, sabres, and bayonets, they fought with fierce determination and became known for their bravery in battles at Miechów, Chroberz, and Grochowiska.
Although the unit existed for only a few months, the legend of the Zouaves of Death has lived on for over a century. Today, they stand as a symbol of what the fight for freedom truly means — uncompromising, dramatic, romantic, and tragic.
